The company

The Nuovo Teatro company was born in 1995, taking part in 'Progetto Giovani', a competition launched by the Ente Teatro Italiano to select and reward new theatre companies run by young people at the start of their careers. And Nuovo Teatro has always wanted to stay young, through the free, vital and courageous spirit that has marked its history of more than twenty years. Starting with its successful first production, La partitella by Giuseppe Manfridi, directed by Piero Maccarinelli – the first of a series of lasting collaborations that have bound the company to artists of great worth. From then on came a succession of artistically innovative and complex productions that have enjoyed great success in theatres all over Italy. Among others: Don Raffaele il trombone – Cupido scherza e spazza with Silvio Orlando and Enzo Cannavale, directed by Silvio Orlando; Ahi corpo crudele! with Simona Marchini; The Invention of Love by Tom Stoppard (Oscar winner for the screenplay of Shakespeare in Love) with Massimo De Francovich, directed by Piero Maccarinelli; A Midsummer Night's Dream with Arturo Brachetti. These are just a few titles from what is now a very rich repertoire. We have always sought original solutions in which different artists and traditions could meet in new and stimulating ways. We have reworked classics of Italian literature, as in Giocando con Orlando and Decamerone. Vizi, virtù, passioni with Stefano Accorsi, directed by Marco Baliani; we have drawn on great international literature with Delitto/Castigo, with Luigi Lo Cascio and Sergio Rubini, who also directed it; we have brought famous films of the 1920s to the stage, as in the musical narration Il castello di Vogelod with Claudio Santamaria and Marlene Kuntz, directed by Fabrizio Arcuri; we have fused words and music in Penso che un sogno così… with Giuseppe Fiorello, directed by Giampiero Solari, in Buena Onda with Rocco Papaleo and Giovanni Esposito, directed by Valter Lupo, and in the eccentric musical conversation A ruota libera, in which Giovanni Veronesi leads his friends Sergio Rubini, Alessandro Haber and Rocco Papaleo through a whirlwind of emotion and laughter. They have all been stimulating and rewarding adventures, thanks also to the enthusiastic support of audiences, for a theatre company that is never content with easy solutions and always strives to explore new territory.
