staged in collaboration with RAI 2 for the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Raffaele Viviani
Broadcast on 18/06/2001 on Raidue Palcoscenico. Pasquale Scialò's Varietà Viviani, with verse, prose and music by Raffaele Viviani, is an entirely new show, an extraordinary event in which we witness an imaginary and madcap day in a variety theatre of the 1910s and 1920s. A year before the fiftieth anniversary of Viviani's death, television pays a choral and heartfelt tribute to the poet, author and actor who marked the comic and dramatic history of early twentieth-century Italy. The portrait created by Scialò, who also made the musical arrangements, draws on the original moods of Viviani's repertoire, calling on his character sketches, his songs and a whole kaleidoscope of intrusive caricatures of types – proletarians, sly operators and flamboyant extroverts. In a most unusual theatre completely rebuilt inside the Teatro Sannazaro in Naples, we will see spectacular variety numbers, interruptions and an open epilogue of social figures, with the audience also played by actors in costume, seated at period tables in the stalls. The roles will be mixed, varied, contaminated. There will be, for example, a keeper of Viviani's memory, a guardian of his ideal theatre who tells anecdotes and fragments, glories and weaknesses, also playing unwitting scenes by the author; a street urchin who presents himself as an intruder with the makings of an apprentice; a ravenous and generous host, a factotum who interacts and improvises as lead singer. Someone will perform a sketch as a vague and laughable hypnotist; someone will mock D'Annunzio-style posturing with the monologue «Il commediografo»; someone will sing “Romanzetta”, taken from Viviani's poem “Guaglione”; and someone will try their hand as a roguish heckler. And finally everyone will contribute to the success and hilarity of a most special author's soirée. Photographs are free of publication rights for press use. Please always credit the photographer.
