Love is not something the Self has at its disposal; rather, it is something that disposes of the Self.
Umberto Galimberti
The great philosopher and Jungian psychoanalyst Umberto Galimberti will guide us through the mysterious territory of Love.
Matters of love do not belong to the story of the rational soul because, in their presence, the soul shifts, leaves the human enclosure of reason and rejoins the madness of the gods. But we do not lose ourselves in it, because the beloved accompanies us – the one we are bound to precisely because they have grasped, and in some way reflected, our own madness.
Accompanying us on this journey, together with Umberto Galimberti, are two icons of Italian cinema, Sergio Rubini and Margherita Buy, whose intense performances bring to the stage some of the most significant literary pages on Love.
Umberto Galimberti, formerly professor of philosophy of history, general psychology and dynamic psychology at the University of Venice, has written for Il Sole 24 Ore and now writes for la Repubblica. His books include Gli equivoci dell'anima, La casa di psiche, L'ospite inquietante. Il nichilismo e i giovani, I miti del nostro tempo and Cristianesimo, la religione dal cielo vuoto.
Sergio Rubini is a leading figure of Italian cinema. After starting out in theatre, he was discovered by Federico Fellini, who brought him to critical attention in Intervista. In 1990 he made his directing debut with La stazione, which won Best Film at the Venice Critics' Week. Important films followed, such as Prestazione straordinaria, Il viaggio della sposa, La terra and L'uomo nero. A sensitive and eclectic actor, he has worked with many directors including Gabriele Salvatores (Denti, Amnesia, Nirvana), Carlo Verdone (Al lupo, al lupo), Giuseppe Tornatore, Francesca Archibugi and Alessandro D'Alatri.
Margherita Buy is one of Italy's finest actresses, able to bring intensity to every role and to reinvent herself with great versatility. A multi-award-winning artist (seven David di Donatello awards, seven Nastri d'Argento, five Globi d'Oro and thirteen Ciak d'Oro), she has been the muse of major directors such as Daniele Luchetti (La settimana della sfinge, Arriva la bufera), Sergio Rubini (La stazione), Ferzan Ozpetek (Le fate ignoranti), Carlo Verdone (Maledetto il giorno che t'ho incontrato), Paolo Virzì (Caterina va in città) and Cristina Comencini (Va' dove ti porta il cuore).
