Dracula is above all a night journey into the unknown. Not only a journey among howling wolves, great banks of mist and roadside crosses, but also an inner journey that the young London solicitor Jonathan Harker is forced to undertake when he is sent to Transylvania to handle the purchase of a London property by a local nobleman.
The young lawyer has no idea of the disaster awaiting him, but as soon as his journey begins he sinks into an atmosphere of mystery and warding-off of evil. It is into this climate of illusion, darkness and fear that young Harker is plunged even before he meets the Count, and when he approaches the castle gate, like someone arriving in Hades, he will understand that he has ended up in a tomb.
But young Harker's journey is not limited to that experience of anguish and fear. The horror of what he lived through at the castle spills over and ends up swallowing his whole existence; it becomes an obsession that contaminates everything he holds dear, irreparably destabilising every certainty. The first victim of this contagion is his wife Mina, whom Jonathan at first does not have the courage to tell what happened. It is by reading the diary he kept during his stay – his imprisonment – at the castle that Mina learns the origin of the malaise that seems to have taken possession of her young husband and changed him profoundly. A malaise that, like an incurable disease, will end up consuming her too. A dimension where darkness prevails over light, brightness wounds the eyes like a blade, the dull beat of a pendulum clock marks the time of no return, a creak precedes a fall and silence the arrival of the beast that bites and kills. A sick reality in which the tension cannot be broken and from which it seems hard to escape alive.
