Production photos by Romolo Eucalitto. FERZANEIDE is a sentimental journey through the story of my memories, of the impressions and the human figures that inspired many of my films. I would like to speak to the people who have encountered my cinema, to the many who have read the pages of my novels, and to those who have heard the operas of my ladies torn apart by love – Aida, Traviata, Butterfly. A little over three years ago I brought Mine Vaganti, always so dear to me, from cinema to the stage. And it was on Mine Vaganti that the curtain suddenly and painfully came down because of the lockdown. A long time had to pass before that quirky comedy of everyday life could reclaim the stage.

 

In those years of suspension I often thought of the many workers and leading figures in theatre, in live performance in general and in music, who were living through the adversity of the times, their families' hardship and the critical material insecurity of a job they had always done with passion and enthusiasm. Partly for this reason, together with the producer Marco Balsamo, I decided to commit myself personally to sending a signal of recovery for a sector that needed – and in part still needs – support and confidence. That is how FERZANEIDE took shape.

This time it is me on stage, me alone, meeting the audience with the story of my artistic career and my feeling for life – mine and other people's. In love, in friendship, in wonder, in all those gestures and places lit by passion. Over the years I have embraced many causes in the name of courage. Courage. Perhaps this word holds the meaning of what I try to say night after night. The courage to follow one's dreams. The courage to challenge prejudice. The courage – or at least the attempt – to find moments of happiness in a turbulent world like today's. And in this, theatre can help us.
