The photo of Alessio Boni is by ph. Gianmarco Chieregato. The Iliad sings of a world in which the ethic of success leaves no room for justice and men decide nothing, but are moved by the gods in a long and terrible war with neither victors nor vanquished. Conscience and choice are not yet human concerns: civilisation will have to wait for the age of Tragedy to know personal responsibility and the full weight of freedom from those gods who are the cause of everything but to blame for nothing.
In that archaic world ruled by force, by inescapable Fate and by capricious gods, it is not hard to see ourselves reflected and recognise our own: our lives ruled by fear, by the desire for wealth, by obsession with the enemy, by power games and by all the destructive forces that plunge us into the irrational and make war possible.
All the seeds of the decline of our West are in the Iliad which, as happens with great poetry, also contains its opposite: responsibility, and the freedom to choose and to say no to horror.
Roberto Aldorasi, Alessio Boni, Marcello Prayer
Ten years after its founding, following I Duellanti and Don Chisciotte, the Quadrivio – Roberto Aldorasi, Alessio Boni, Francesco Niccolini and Marcello Prayer – rewrites and stages the Iliad, to mirror itself in the most ancient myths of Western poetry and in the war of all wars.
