The Adventures of Ulysses
The show
A new take on the myth of Ulysses: a journey into the mind and adventures of the most human of Homer's heroes.
After Giocando con Orlando, Decamerone and Azul, Stefano Accorsi returns with Nuovo Teatro in a new and ambitious project. Not a straightforward adaptation, but a journey into the soul of the hero who calls himself Nobody.
Daniele Finzi Pasca, who created Azul with Accorsi, stages a theatre in which the body shapes dreamlike images, and looks for fragility in the hero: precious porcelain that, when it breaks, reveals humanity.

We are delighted to announce the new show starring Stefano Accorsi, an artist with whom we have built a true partnership over the years. After the success of Marco Baliani's “Giocando con Orlando” and “Decamerone. Vizi, virtù e passioni”, and of “Azul”, written and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, Stefano Accorsi immerses himself in a new and ambitious project: a theatrical rereading of the myth of Ulysses. The show is not a simple stage adaptation but a true journey into the psyche, the soul and the adventures of the most human of Homer's heroes. Nuovo Teatro thus continues its commitment to promoting and creating quality projects able to fascinate and engage a wide audience.

Brief director's notes. Words need sweat in order to be played with elegance. For them to become light they must be stripped and smoothed, turned into multicoloured pebbles on an imaginary beach. I come from a theatre where the body hammers words, forging incoherent, dreamlike images. Finding these points of imbalance takes actors who are strong and delicate at the same time, used to using the body with the elasticity and power of a bow that shoots images into the audience's eyes. I am so glad to work with Stefano again: we understood each other easily when we built “Azul”, and now, tackling “Nessuno”, we will refine our complicity.
I am a conscientious objector; in my country I served a few months in prison for refusing military service, so telling the deeds of warriors is not only unusual for me but completely unprecedented – a kind of somersault without a net. I am a clown; I love simple heroes, losers, those in whom I recognise myself, the fragile ones, made of crumbling material. In the display cabinet at my grandmother's house were kept the cups of the best china, never used, too precious to handle. Everyday coffee was drunk from odd, chipped cups nobody was attached to. I inherited those cups, and I also took one of the good ones, which had shattered at the end of a Christmas lunch and was then kept for years in cotton wool, waiting for an improbable miracle.
When Stefano and Marco told me about this show, I thought the time had come to try to glue together the fragments of fine china – the precious kind that one would like to be invincible, which, when it breaks, reveals the humanity heroes should have. Then I wondered whether this Ulysses belonged to the good china or to the set Grandma used every day. Even today I wonder whether with this show we will glue together shattered pieces, or face the simplicity of the one you would want as your companion in every discussion, every chat in the belly of Grandma's kitchen, where epic adventures turned into the everyday of ordinary lives, and the adventures of simple people became the subtle weave of extraordinary lives.
Nessuno risponderà.
