The show premiered at the Palermo di Scena Festival on 6, 7 and 8 September 2000 at the Teatro di Verdura in Palermo. Director's notes
L'Avaro is a text as universal as it is timeless. Given its themes, it could be adapted to any era: avarice, relations between fathers and children, malice and arbitrariness are as present today as they were in those centuries.
I did not want to make a forced 'modern' staging of The Miser, but I do want to remind the audience of Molière's modernity. If I made any abstractions in the adaptation, it was because of some (rare) archaisms in the language; the lines could be used in our everyday conversations, and the clashes between Harpagon and his children could have been written by Ibsen, or Chekhov, or…
So we worked in this direction, building a bridge between Molière's time and ours and looking for similarities between these two periods, so distant at first sight and yet so close.
Alessandro Haber will be a new, modern Harpagon. In my Miser he will pass as if by magic from a Goldonian Harpagon to a harsh Brechtian banker.
Simona Marchini will play the director of a marriage agency, turning Frosine into a matchmaker of our own day.
The actors will perform Molière in a modern way, but without betraying the spirit of the text.
Abbiamo improvvisato molto e riso molto durante le prove, with una troupe affiatata.
I hope this pleasure can also be passed on to the audience.
