Come trasporto i sentimenti, i momenti malinconici, le risate sul palcoscenico?
This was the first question I asked myself – and it made me a little anxious – when the idea of bringing Mine vaganti to the stage began to take shape. The first time I told the story to the film producer Domenico Procacci, he was very struck by it and added, enthusiastically, that it could also make an excellent play. Shortly afterwards we started the film project and asked Ivan Cotroneo to collaborate on the screenplay.
Today, at Marco Balsamo's invitation, that prospect becomes reality, with an ensemble cast and a staging that leaves the spirit of the film intact.
Of course, I had to work by subtraction, keeping what was essential, intriguing, attractive and funny. I left out situations I loved, but what cinema shows, theatre hides; so I sacrificed some scenes and invented others, partly to give the production new life.
The setting changes too. A story like this could no longer hold up in Salento today, so I set it in a small town like Gragnano, or somewhere nearby – a place where coming out would still cause a scandal. The Cantone family remains, owners of a large pasta factory, with their deep-rooted upper-middle-class traditions and a father eager to hand the running of the business down to his two sons. Everything falls apart when one of them declares he is gay, beating to it his younger brother, who has come back from Rome precisely to open up to his family and live in truth.
I tell stories about people, about sexual choices, about the struggle to adapt to a social change that is by now irreversible. Here the role of the pater familias is emblematic – dramatic and ironic at the same time.
The emotion of the close-ups has given way to punctuation and words; the three gay friends have become two, and I have added a little show within the show so as to underline – even caricature – the traits that on screen reached the audience through the camera. Theatre can afford the luxury of silence, but silences must be hilarious; otherwise they have to be filled with many lines and a strong, overwhelming rhythm. For this I drew on my own experiences.
One should never be bored at the theatre. That was my starting point, to keep the show from being slow. I chose a continuous rhythm that never stops, not even during scene changes. Credit goes to Luigi Ferrigno, who invented a play of moving curtains; Pasquale Mari's lighting does its part too, as do Alessandro Lai's colourful, flamboyant costumes.
I have made a comedy I would enjoy going to see at the theatre, where the audience is an integral part of the staging and interacts with the actors, who often perform towards the stalls as if they were in the town square, looking at it as they speak. The square – the audience – is the beating heart that sets the pulse of the play.
