directed by Sergio Rubini. After years of paying rent, suppose one fine day you wake up and decide to listen to that little voice that has been telling you for years to take the step you never had the courage to take: shoulder a mortgage and finally buy a home of your own. Everyone knows the benefits of owning property. What nobody tells you are the certain disasters you will face the day you decide to put the only asset you own into the hands of a renovation. Ristrutturazione (Renovation) is precisely the story, told confidentially, of the renovation of a flat: a coming and going of architects and engineers, alarmists and plumbers, builders and neighbours. A plethora of characters – competent and incompetent, honest and crooked, idle and industrious to the point of frenzy – who take turns in the unlucky owner's life, turning it upside down without mercy. And this upturned life is even more so if there are two owners, a He and a She, with their different points of view and their different ability to withstand the daily attack of the armoured troops turning their 'nest' into an occupied house. And when the drainpipe blocks and floods the bedroom, it would seem that the very foundations holding up the couple are about to give way… Accompanied and punctuated by the tunes and atmospheres of a band, the story starts a long way back: a first little home in Rome, a basement with a plumbing problem that a clumsy film driver offers to help with, ending up turning the basement into a swimming pool; then the lovely penthouse among the rooftops of the capital, with an astronomical rent, where nothing works, from the entryphone to the hot water. And finally the long-desired purchase of a home of one's own, the first home – and that is when the phenomenon of renovation falls relentlessly on the two unfortunates. A bathtub to be built on site, automated sun blinds, the installation of an alarm and its cameras, the elimination of a shameful smell of sewage that refuses to let go for a full thirty days: these are the stations through which the trials of the protagonist and his partner unfold, and from that whirl of events they emerge stressed but renovated… except that the arrival of the pandemic resets everything, imposing new rules and new codes: a new world that in turn needs a deep, collective renovation in order to get going again.
