The show premiered at the Teatro Ventidio Basso in Ascoli Piceno on 27 January 2015. Certainly, a bourgeois couple can be a little stage for every bourgeois vice: showing off wealth, utilitarian relationships, claims on behalf of children from previous marriages, assets to divide, lawyers' letters, bank accounts, threats, wills, settlements, panic attacks and so on. Not to mention the lies, the subterfuge, the betrayals and all the complications that follow.

A couple that works this way is often bent on managing its status through calculation and dishonesty, having long forgotten that what once united them was love. Now imagine that the best friends of such a couple are two people who are together for entirely different reasons. They are not married, they have no property, no land to divide or houses to grab, no joint bank account, and as far as material goods are concerned they share only a lovely rented penthouse in the centre of Rome and tons of books they no longer know where to put. He is a writer, a Strega Prize winner with two bestsellers behind him, fifty and wearing it well, with the carelessness of the seasoned progressive intellectual; she is twenty years younger, with the charm of someone who still hangs on the master's every word – the master being her boyfriend. Moreover, unlike the other couple, instead of having children these two have written books together – his books, to tell the truth – and have an unhealthy need always to tell each other everything, at least in intention.

Now, the anomaly of these two couples is undoubtedly that they are friends, and that there is not a weekend, a holiday, an outing or a public holiday that the four do not spend together. Suppose now that the bourgeois couple, like any self-respecting bourgeois couple, is going through yet another marital crisis – infidelity, to be precise – and has rushed round to the others' home on an evening when they had not planned to meet. But isn't it precisely in times of need that friends are there for? And so the evening turns into night, and the living room with its three-thousand-euros-a-month view becomes a real war zone, where not only all the differences between the two couples emerge, but also their different points of view, the distances, what each cannot stand about the other, the whole tangle of the unsaid that until then lay at the bottom of their consciences. The result is that the morning after the battle, at first light, despite the premises, the couple most divided will be precisely the one held together only by love. But why – is love perhaps not enough?
